Hi I'm Chris from TIDE Training.
Today we are going to show you how to tie a Trucker's Hitch This is part of the requirement's under heavy vehicle licence now when we use ropes or any type of load restraint weneed to make sure there's no damage to the rope at all or any other type of load restraint , this includes tears or any contaminant to the actual restraint, that's part of your chain of responsibility requirements.
Now when we start using ropes while throwing the rope over we have to make sure there's no one on the other side of the trailer so we look between the load and of courseunder the load as well, so no one is there throw the rope over and then we are going to start with what is called a Clove Hitch okay to start our clove hitch we startby placing the rope underneath the tie rail that comes across from the leftto the right through the loop like so then we do another half hitchsame knot again like that pull that tight that becomes your clove hitch it'simportant you don't have more than a hundred and fifty mil tail to make surethat you're meeting the load restraint regulations now we will go across the other side and start our trucker's hitch okay sobefore we start our knot I will just point out a couple variations thisknot there's also a single line hitch and double line hitch I will demonstrateboth of those for you we want to make sure our rope is in the middlewe then drop the rope down and then we're ready to start our hitch okay so now we're ready to start ourtrucker's hitch i will point out that's there's some variations to this I will demonstrate boththose variations also gonna demonstrate a single line hitch and a double linehitch then we'll start by grabbing the rope in our left hand and make a loop like that we then lay that rope across there withour right hand and make a loop once twice ensuring that second loop is atthe back of it so it won't sleep forward we then pull that up as we pull that onedown and that locks that knot into position like that We then grab this part of the rope pull it through this loop here pull that down now when you pull down make sure you do pull down and not out, one hitch will give you 50 kilos of pressure when when we do two hitches that gives you ahundred kilos of pressure because we got twice the mechanical advantage we then tiethis off with a clove hitch so exactly the same as what we did the other side we start by placing the rope on the left side like that we bring that across to theright like that pull the rope through there pull that up and down and that locks that in.
with the excess you just need to ensure that we tie thisoff appropriately so we can put it back through here and tie in a series ofclove hitches we might be able to put it inside the load.
We just need to be sure we don't have more than that 150 mil excess make sure we're not breaching any load restraint regulations okay so now we're going to demonstrate a double line hitch so now I'm going to demonstrate thesecond style of hitch and also a double line hitch as well so we start by placing in a rope down the center of our load just around the tie, while ive got it like thatput the rope across the back of your hand grab the rope through there thatthen pulls up bring it up about halfway up your load change hands if you need tomake a loop that goes through the loop so it look like thatthis time we pull it we make a second loop up higher like that pull that upwe pull that up again as we pull that one down you don't need to pull it tighter at this stage yet we then do the exact same knot again once again across the back ofthe hand grab that so you reach down up like you're shaking someones hand pull that rope upthere like that.
Then we start our rope again, one here like that come through a second one like so thenpull that one down and then we go through two hitches so this will give usthat 100 kilos of pretentions then pull down not out and you're knot is gonna look like thiswe then finish that off with a clove hitch once again go from the left pullit across the right that then comes through there pull that through there and just pull it up and down just ensuring that it's locked in with your excess can't pull that back up for thereyou can tie that off with another clove hitch or to tie it off with a series ofhitches through here just ensure we don't have that 115 mil of excess in thereagain and that's a double line trucker's hitch Now we have demonstrated how to tie the single and double line trucker's hitch which is the knot we need to cover forthe heavy vehicle license I also point out that if you do work in the heavy vehicle industry it's important you understand your chain of responsibilities obligations when it comes to load restraint when it comes to load restraints wejust need to make sure that there's no damage no tears or anything like thatinto that loader restraint and ensure that you understand what yourobligations are as a professional driver in the industry.
